Compassion must meet need. Jesus did; but with Him, as with us, while this was an inevitable expression of love, His heart and purpose were set on something far different — the production of a race of humans for whom the meaning of life had become not to have their needs met, but to meet the needs of others, and to meet in them their greatest need which would make them in turn the lovers of others. And this is the gospel.
