The Witness of the Spirit by Roel Velema

“The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Rom. 8:16).

The witness of the Spirit is really wonderful. At the start of our Christian life we accept by faith Christ’s work at Calvary. We become children of God (John 1:12) and by faith we know that we are, regardless our feelings. That’s how it happened with me, but after some time I began to long for God more and more and the Bible began to open. It was the Spirit that bore witness that I was a child of God who longed for the pure spiritual milk (1 Peter 2:2). I knew in an inner way I was a child of God and no one could bring me to other thoughts.
It’s also a great day in our lives when by the same inner witness of the Spirit we know we are joined to the Lord as one spirit with Him (1 Cor. 6:17). What had been for a long time more or less facts taken by faith, became an inner knowing where He and I are not performing separately, but as one. ‘HE IS’ and therefore and ‘I am’.
I think the inner witness was accelerated by taking the distinction between soul and spirit by faith (Hebr. 4:12) and refuse again and again to take my soul as my identity. That can be a struggle when others condemn our natural reactions and urge us “to do something about it”. But we have to stick to the level that it’s done in union and this leads sooner or later to the witness of the Spirit. This makes me to conclude that our birth from above is as joyful to see as union. This rebirth is nothing less than to enter as human creatures into the oneness with the Trinity. Of course we will never become the Creator, but my head spins of being a member of the Royal Divine family and share eternal life in oneness. What a prospect, now and into eternity! Blessed is the man and woman who has a present foretaste of this as the Spirit testifies total truth to us.

The witness of the Spirit will come in God’s timing, so don’t try to get. It will come.
