When I moved to America in 1998, Sue and I never talked about things of a spiritual or religious nature. We even made sure our marriage vows had references to God removed. Some people at Sprint where I worked at the time seemed very patient, and I wondered how they could be so. I inquired and Jesus was mentioned often. By 2001, I worked at another tech company and another coworker mentioned Jesus again at which time 9/11 had just occurred, and Sue and I found ourselves talking about Jesus and prayer for the first time in our relationship.
By the time I was laid off November 2001, I had been visiting Homer’s Coffee House for a few months where I was encouraged by their staff to read the Bible. After I said the sinners prayer in one of the weekly bible study groups, I followed the in-crowd and visited a few churches and started doing what everyone else did – go to church weekly, tithe, pray, sing songs, listen to the pastor’s Sunday sermon, and join a handful of small groups. After many years doing this I became increasingly concerned that what I read in the new testament wasn’t what I saw week in week out at the local churches.
I didn’t see saints sold out for the Gospel, I didn’t see what I read in the book of Acts – sharing resources with one another, meeting in homes, sick being healed, demons being cast out, people being baptized and the gospel being shared. It all seemed more like a social club and business.
By 2006 the Lord suggested I look over there to an old missionary Norman Grubb and the Christ as us community who knew union with God, and I did so. I learned the truth that Christ lives in us, as us. And He is the life in us, and through us. And I learned with this group and they answered many of my questions over the years. That same year I left full time work to serve a local faith mission, Heartland International Ministries, before returning to full time work in 2008-2013 at Burn’s and McDonnell Engineering (BMcD) IT support group.
December 2013 I heard the Holy Spirit clearly invite me to leave paid employment so He could rewire my misunderstandings about His nature and ways. He said He had provided for me through the retirement I’d earned while working at Burns and McDonell Engineering.
2014 the Lord encouraged my desire to develop a service business to help encourage small business owners as they established their workflows, or needed to support their applications, as had been my habit and experience for all my working life.
January 2015 I decided to just help people without charging any fee, and by April 28th 2015, I clearly heard the Lord invite me to work, going forward by faith, and not sight.
I heard God say to me:
“If you want to carry on your way fine, but I will never drop a pallet of money on your drive way so you can feel comfortable, no, my way is by faith and not sight.”
Do you want to work for me, My way?
of course I said yes as this had been the desire of my heart since 2001.
After this personal invitation, He cleaned out many errors in my thinking telling me that His love wasn’t my love, and many other misunderstandings. He started and finished projects at home that I’d procrastinated about. He had me sacrifice resources and forgive debts. He filled me with the Holy Spirit in August, I instantly knew God’s love for me. In October he cleaned out misunderstandings about the heavenly realms.
December 2015 I asked the Lord
“Where is my fruit – I’ve never shared the gospel, baptized a person or healed anyone?”
He directed me to many who were walking out Luke 10.
March 13th, I ran into The Last Reformation (TLR) a movement started in Denmark by Torben Sondergaard who like me thirst for the reality of the Acts of the Apostles in our generation. As I watched the videos I knew this was real. I started downloading videos and then the Holy Spirit said go to the #Kickstarter event in San Antonio, TX on March 18th. I went and by the afternoon God was healing people through me – I was just like Peter healing the sick!
In June I attended 2 more #kickstarter events while at the Acts 2 School in Vero Beach, Florida, and gained about 250 new brothers and sisters in Christ who are in various places in the same journey I’m on – to abandon ourselves to Jesus calling and do His work, His way – by faith, not sight, and being obedient to his commands.
If ye love me, keep my commandments (John 14:15)
Today, I live and move and have my being in Christ, as Christ in my form, led moment by moment by the Holy Spirit, living each breathe spontaneously doing the next thing, whatever that might be.
When we are born again we immediately become fathers and have everything we need but we just don’t know it yet:
“I mean that the heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave, though he is the owner of everything, but he is under guardians and managers until the date set by his father.” Galatians 4:1-2 ESV
That’s why our mind needs to be renewed as Paul said:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2 ESV
The very best news however is that God not only completed all the work that needs to be done at the cross through His Son, but that He will and does that very same work in us as His sons.
That means when we, by His loving action in us, cause us to walk in His ways, by His indwelling Holy Spirit, the anointing within us, teaches us ALL things, He causes us to walk in His ways, we no longer think of ourselves as independent selves, because that’s the lie of the evil one, but we accept finally, that we are a container or branch, that the living water flows through to meet the needs of every person we meet.
That is in fact the pearl of great price, and very Good News.
No longer do we work to save ourselves, but rest in the fact that the work is done and we just do the next thing we are led to do.
